Our Services

The “Child-Centered Process” is a method whereby a child suspected of having difficulty learning in the regular classroom can be properly identified. This referral process can be initiated by anyone that is directly or indirectly responsible for the child’s education. The

parent/guardian is notified about the referral. Information is gathered from the teacher, school counselor and school nurse and is reviewed by a school committee. Information is collected from the school, parents, medical professionals and agencies providing services to the student (with parental/guardian permission) in order to assist in effective evaluation. The student is evaluated and an Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee meeting is called. The ARD committee is convened and the findings of the evaluations are discussed and the Individual Educational Plan is developed. Parents/guardians have a five-day waiting period to think about whether or not to consent to Special Education services.

 

 

 

 

Evaluations are free of charge and include: academic, intellectual, psychological, speech and language, hearing, assistive technology, and related services.

 

Instructional settings are decided by the ARD committee. They may be one or a website picture3 combination of the following:

 

Homebound/Hospital setting are services in the home or hospital due to illness or chronic condition.

 

Self-contained setting is designed to individualize instruction and employ specialized strategies. Self- contained setting is a small room setting that includes visits to the regular classroom.

 

Mainstreaming is an instructional arrangement for providing special education services in the general education setting which may include in-class support, accommodations and modifications.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Resource classes includes instruction in a small group setting; designed to individualize instruction and employ specialized strategies, while allowing the student to remain in the regular classroom for the majority of the day.

 

Content Mastery is a service where the student only leaves the regular classroom when specialized assistance is needed.

 

Adaptive Physical Education is available as a specialized service for student with orthopedic or other health impairments.

 

Speech Therapy is specialized assistance for students with speech/language impairments.

 

In-class Support is when special education personnel provides specialized assistance in the regular classroom to special education and regular education students.

 

Co-Teaching is provided when special education teachers plan and teach with regular teachers in the regular classroom.

 

Related Services are specialized services that support student in their educational endeavors. These are: assistive technology, counseling, health services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work services, and transportation.

Instructional programs- The task of the Special Education Department is to provide instruction and support to students in the least restrictive environment that ensures learning takes place, in accord with each student’s abilities. Students who qualify are served from birth to 21 years of age. Educational endeavors include community agencies, businesses, charities, social clubs, and volunteers in order to assure success.
