Press Release – Multipurpose Facility Construction Incident
San Diego Independent School District appreciates the opportunity to review the Channel 6 news recent comments and coverage regarding the District’s Multi-Purpose Facility project. We value the role of the media in informing the public; however, in order to ensure the public is accurately informed, the District would like to address several statements that were included in the reporting that are inaccurate or incomplete.
First, comments suggesting that the contractor warned of problems for months before the construction incident are incorrect. The temporary construction setback is still under investigation by the contractor, architects, and engineers working on the project, and any responsibility for the construction incident will be investigated and addressed via insurance secured by the parties to protect the District from such losses.
Second, statements implying that District failed to communicate or act transparently are false. San Diego ISD has worked closely and openly with architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory partners to make sure that construction was proceeding, and the District’s administration has consistently provided updates at the public meetings of the Board of Trustees and relevant stakeholders as information becomes available.
Third, statements suggesting that the multipurpose facility setback was due to having 53 rain days since the beginning of constructions is a false inference. The cause of the construction incident has not been determined, and there is no evidence that rain delays were the cause. Instead, rain delays are merely tracked by the contractor and reported to the District for its consideration along with professional input from the architect. Districts do not penalize contractors for not working during recognized weather delays as contractual allowances for weather delays are standard in construction.
Additionally, any suggestion that the facility is being abandoned or indefinitely delayed is inaccurate. The District remains fully committed to completing the Multi-Purpose Facility and is actively working toward a revised timeline that prioritizes safety, quality, and fiscal responsibility while also limiting any financial impact to the District.
We respectfully request that Channel 6 News issue clarifications or corrections to ensure the public receives accurate information regarding this project.
